Real Brothers - Soul Controllers [1992]

Real Brothers
Raise The Flag
I'm A Get Mine
Keep It Smooth
Another Drug Song
Two Heads Are Better Than One (T.O.A.M.P.)
Soul Controllers
Ya Burnin' Yourself
Dream Seq. (Now We Got Africa!)
Ease It Down
What's Next?
Mom Taught Me

This is very specific album. You can clearly see transition between new and old style of rhyming, topics vary from conscious to everyday ghetto stories, production styles vary from g-funk to boom-bap, etc... but the most important is the solid dose of originality that comes from Real Brothers approach. They're from San Francisco, and maaybe you'll manage to find some similarities with Clever Jeff''s talk, especially in attitude.

Status Quotient (Instrumental)

"Pyro, a former member of a rap group called The Kraken, was a graduate student at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University when he recorded “Propaganda” b/w “Status Quotient.”1 This is worth mentioning because both songs sound like they were written by a scholar who converted heady, opinionated, religiously inflected prose essays into fiery rap verses. That might seem like a sarcastic jab at the late 90s indie rap philosophy of aesthetics that forgives unpolished vocalists so long as their lyrics are adequately literate, but in this case it is a sincere compliment. Unlike the many tepid or sloppy rappers of the era, Pyro recites his rhymes with an intimidating amount of conviction. His delivery is impassioned, and his flow is riddled with imperfections that actually work in his favor by humanizing his sermon." [quoted from TROY blog, take a look at the whole article here]

"B Flatt "Back To Basics" the Hip-hop EP was an independent release from the Big Noise camp that defined a new level of quality, soul and organic music as folks from the tri-city area built their catalog. With radio play and interviews from collage stations like San Jose Sate as well as performing with names like Rasco in downtown San Jose B-Flatt and Tyranny brought you that authentic hip-hop feeling before it's time. As a testament to this selections are still in rotation today on Big Noise Radio generating positive fan feedback! In 1995 the project was produced by Noiseman on an Akai S1100 and sequenced in Cu-Base then mixed on a Soundcraft 24 track Spirit mixer. Vocals were recorded on a Tascam MS16 tape recorder. This album is a classic hip-hop collectors item. B-Flatt aka B Malik from Oakland CA can also be heard hosting shows on Big Noise Radio."

Bahamadia - Good Rap Music [2006]

Good Rap Music
Real Love
Serious Part I
Buck Season
Culture Cut
Reign Prelude
Reign
Fun
Serious Part II
Good Rap Improv
Glory
Thank You

This is probably the most slept on Bahamadia's album... In the worst case its solid album and you should listen to it any way because you know who Bahamadia is. Its very specific album, in 2005/06 you didn't have too much people that could recognize it's quality and thats the main reason for bad reception of it. Kev Brown and Hezekiah, amongs others, did some production and its very soulfull, while Bahamadia drops some simple and deep conscious lyrics.

Diamond Knights feat. Prodigal Sunn, William Cooper & M9

Endemic is beatmaker/producer from the UK and this is his second album. Concept is well-known - one producer - many guest rappers, but the key moment that makes difference between Endemic's and similar releases is that he doesn't make boring generic beats. There are some very interesting guest names for me, like that of Triple Darkness mcs, Darkim Be Allah from Fame Labs, Roc Marcy, and I'm specially glad to here some new Hell Razah work. Most of the rappers did the good job with rhymes, and if you like the sound of Wu classics and UK hip hop than this is the album for you.

The Outfit - Soundtrack To Life [1999]

Jas Mace and Marchitect were introduced to each other through little league baseball in their hometown of Newark, Delaware. It was later realized that the two shared more than just a passion for sports, but also for hip-hop music. They began writing raps and recording music at Marchitect's house, which is also where their group's name was created. The origin of the name is the street address of where the two emcees honed their production and emceeing skills.
Marchitect's older brother, Grouchy Greg Watkins co-CEO of AllHipHop.com, organized a group called The Outfit. The Outfit released three 12" singles and a full length album on Oblique Recordings, a label that was also created by Grouchy Greg Watkins. The first 12" was released in 1995 and featured "Beauty of the Week" b/w "3 Mics, 2 Marks, and 1 Jas." In 1997, The Outfit released their second 12" that featured the songs "Why I Don't Know"/"Day In, Night Out" b/w "The Outfit Presents"/"Rise and Shine." Their final 12" release was in 1999 and featured the singles "Outta Sight" b/w "The Telephone." The 49ers were featured on all three of these releases. In 1999, The Outfit finally released their first and only full length album called The Soundtrack to Life.
The members of The Outfit eventually went their separate ways, but The 49ers continued recording. (quoted from wiki)

I like this album, for me it's maybe even better than most of newer 49ers's stuff. Rhymes and beats are pretty simple and minimalistic but they stick to the essence...

Miles Davis / Easy Mo Bee - Doo-Bop [1992]

Doo-Bop was jazz musician Miles Davis' final studio album, which would have marked the beginning of his turn to hip-hop-oriented ("doo-bop" being a portmanteau of producer Easy Mo Bee's short-lived, New Jack Swing-derived "doo-hop" and "bebop") tracks. However, Davis died on September 28, 1991, at which time only six pieces for the album had been completed. To finish off the album, producer Easy Mo Bee was asked to take some of the unreleased trumpet performances (stemming from what Davis called the RubberBand Session), and build tracks that Miles 'would have loved' around the recordings. The album's posthumous tracks (as stated in the liner notes) are "High Speed Chase" and "Fantasy". A reprise of the song "Mystery" rounded out the album's nine-track length.

The project stemmed from Davis sitting in his New York apartment in the summer with the windows open, listening to the sound of the streets. He wanted to record an album of music that captured these sounds. In early 1991, Davis called up his friend Russell Simmons and asked him to find some young producers who could help create this kind of music, leading to Davis' collaboration with Easy Mo Bee, his last, the result of which, Doo-Bop, was released by Warner Bros. Records on June 30, 1992, to mixed reviews. The album won the 1993 Grammy Award for Best R&B Instrumental Performance. (quoted from wiki)

Steve Coleman And Metrics ‎– A Tale Of 3 Cities [1994]

"Developing original methods of vocal prosody and musical improvisation within unique nested looping structures is the foundation upon which the Metrics concept is built. Metrics is an amalgam of futuristic vocal and instrumental improvisations layered over a shifting base of street-style African based polyrhythms, redefining the structural ideas of earlier pioneers of African-American music. This concept is the result of a desire to play creative dance music based on the living experiences of African-American people and the African Diaspora. These ideas are the result of brain-storming among musicians, producers and rappers based in New York, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Chicago and Oakland. The influence of several distinct regions results in a broad-based mixture with a distinct flavor.

The musical vision of these young artists has created a cult following and a fresh music, leading the way in creative dance music. These young pioneers are committed to a vision of forging ahead to create living, musical experiences; thus ensuring the musicís fresh and unpredictable sound. Although at first listening Metrics might appear to have some similarities with the current Jazz- Rap trend further listening will reveal that this music involves unique combinations and close interplay among the various musical elements, showing a definite move in another direction. This music is not simply Hip-Hop with Jazz samples but is another form of music in the making!

Expanding on the previous unique developments of creative movements in New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC, the main intention is development of music expressing todayís living process. Earlier explorations were concentrated on developing a distinct rhythmic base on which to build musical structures. Steps were then taken to expand the concept further by developing the unique melodic and voice leading aspects of this music. Added to these developments are the unique versatility and amazing prosodic abilities of the most creative rappers around today. These lyricists from different urban centers in the eastern portion of the states are paving the way in the next development in street music. Given the novel subject matter, unique rhythmic devices (alliterative meter, syllabic meter, accentual meter and free verse) and the ability to remain open and take chances with creative musical material, these artists are at the forefront of innovations in music today.

A main goal of the artists involved in Metrics is to use the power of creative music to help in the process of true world unification. To that end steps are now being taken to connect with creative artists from different countries worldwide in an effort to project truth music. The current experimental trends in London, Italy, West Africa, etc. are examples of creative people pulling together with similar visions. Metrics is a significant contribution to these movements.

This is a music for adventurous souls who desire to explore the possibilities that 21st Century music has to offer.

The lyricist on this recording are Sub-Zero, Kokayi, Utasi, Shahliek and Black Thought.
The musicians are Steve Coleman (alto saxophone), Andy Milne (piano), Reggie Washington (electric bass), Gene Lake (drums), Ravi Coltrane (tenor sax), Ralph Alessi (trumpet), Michael Wimberly, (percussion), Ezra Greer and Duane Sarden (samples).  Joe Marciano (recording and mix engineer). Recorded May/June, 1994 in Brooklyn, NY" (quoted from: http://www.m-base.com/tale.html )

Coss - Grayer Skies [2013]

"Grayer Skies is the first half of a two part LP series, the second half being Bluer Skies dropping in late November. The concept is what I call a "compilation of styles" as opposed to songs. Each project has its own distinct vibe and sound, putting on display different aspects of my style both production wise and content wise. Grayer Skies is a ode to the more boom bap, introspective aspect of my style, while Bluer Skies will showcase the more commercial side of my music. I hope you enjoy the music. Thanks for your love and support. -C$$"

This creative arena was designed as an ongoing workshop dedicated to the “elevation of the rhyme” in which any kind of physical or verbal aggression was banned." Asheru & Blue Black Of The Unspoken Heard - Soon Come [2001]

Both of Asheru and Blue Black do the MC and production jobs (not the whole beatmaking and production stuff tho). Best thing about this album is that you can clearly see the evolution of the rap from golden age era, but in a positive way... we could easily say that from one point in the begining of '00s not just the big part of rap god dumbed down, but that it was hard to follow and understand the high level of consciousness of the part that continued to evolve in good way. So, "Soon come" is the mix of conscious and party rap under the "stay true" moto.

King Tee - IV Life [1994]

Here comes the funk of the future!!!!!!

"DX: And I want to talk to you about King Tee, another of my heroes.
Ice-T: He was [Notorious B.I.G.'s] favorite fuckin' emcee! Let's go there. Biggie said, when he came to L.A. They're very similar. [Laughs]

DX: King T, besides Spoonie Gee's "cheeba, cheeba, y'all" is one of the first emcees to rhyme about smokin' weed.
Ice-T: He had a thing he used to make rhymes, he called it the "drunk technique." He had to be the right amount of drunk to get on the mic. If he got too drunk, he couldn't spit. If he wasn't drunk enough, it wouldn't came out. Sometimes it would take days to get to the right focus point. Various ‎– Underground Airplay: Volume IV - Certified East Coast Bomb [1995]

"Marc Ecko was a huge hip-hop head/graff fan and he was competing feverishly to keep his fledgling clothing line relevant in the midst of other brands growing in popularity (yes, Fubu, Nautica, Mecca, Timberland, Polo Sport, and Tommy Hilfiger were threatening his business). Ecko had an advantage though. He already in a short amount of time had managed to gain a decent cult following because from day one his brand was dedicated to the underground Hip-Hop culture. In an attempt to appeal to that core audience of saavy street-influenced consumers the Echo brand would join forces with the ultra respected Hip-Hop troop, The Lyricist Lounge and release a free mixtape in conjunction with the purchase of their T-shirts.....they dubbed it the "One shirt, One tape, One Love" philosophy. These tapes... represented true hip-hop to the highest degree." (quoted from http://purehip-hop.blogspot.com)
